In the 20s, Rene Lacoste and his team named 'The Musketeers' took the Davis Cup from the American players hand they became a legend in the tennis field. They also had three French Open victories, two victories that took place in England, as well as his two victories in the U.S. Open that occurred at Forest Hills, NY.
Rene Lacoste was born in July 1904 in France and died in 1996 on 12th October. This means he lived a long live until the age of 92.
The famous "alligator" was conceived in 1927.In fact it existed for a long time before and was used as Lacoste nickname only now it is known in all the world.
From the original story told directly by Rene Lacoste we understood that this nickname was given to him by the United States press. It all happened because of a bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup Team. The team captain said that he would buy Lacoste the suitcase made from alligator skin if he were to win one particularly important match for his team. After that Lacoste got stuck with this nickname forever as it reflects very well the tenacity shown by Lacoste on the tennis courts when playing for his team.
One day, a friend of Lacoste drew him an alligator and Lacoste decided to embroider it on the blazer he worn when playing tennis in competitions.
Later, Lacoste got married with Mademoiselle Simone Thion de la Chaume, which was a winner of the British Womens golf title and admired his tennis tactics being an attentive viewer of his games.
In 1933 Rene Lacoste associated with Andre Gillier, who already owned the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm. They agreed to make a company to manufacture Lacoste embroiled shirt with that famous logo. The first catalogue of the company was produced in 1933 and contains shirts designed for playing on the courts in addition to several other shirts designed to used when participating in golf, tennis, and sailing.
This is consider to be the first company using this market strategy. So the brand name of Lacoste and then the logo appeared for a lot of times in different articles not regarding clothing. This idea is extremely good and successful.
